iPad-Wi-Fi iPad goes on sale April 3 in U.S.
The wait for the iPad is, er, well, it’s just beginning I suppose. On Friday, Apple announced that the new device would go on sale on Saturday, April 3 in the U.S. Customers who want to pre-order can put in their claim on March 12—just a week away, so get your clicking fingers ready. Of course, the April 3 date only applies to the Wi-Fi-only models. If you’re holding out for the 3G versions, you’ll have to wait until late April. And those customers outside the U.S.—Apple specifically mentions Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and the U.K.—will have to wait until late April for either model. Pricing for those countries is still unknown, though Apple said that it would be announced in April. The company also said that the … Read entire article »

iPad-Reader: Steve Jobs says no tethering between iPad and iPhone
Steve Jobs appears to have fired off a tersely worded email reply to a user in Sweeden who asked whether the WiFi-only iPad could be tethered to the iPhone: “No.” Jezper Söderlund of the Swedish website Slashat.se reports that he sent Apple’s chief executive an email identifying himself as an Apple customer before adding, “I’m also awaiting the release of the iPad. However, I have one question: Will the wifi-only version somehow support tethering thru my iPhone?” The full email headers Söderlund forwarded to AppleInsider appear to indicate that Jobs sent his one word reply at 8:30 AM from his iPhone. Whether one can tether Apple currently supports Bluetooth and USB (but not WiFi) tethering to share an … Read entire article »

I love Flickr (and alliteration, apparently). That is, I love Flickr on my desktop, and often on my Apple TV. I’ve never really been in love with the mobile experience, mostly due to long wait times and cumbersome navigation. When Mike Bernardo from Green Volcano Software contacted me about Flickit Pro, his Flickr app for the iPhone, I was definitely … Read entire article »
iPhone-Android largely unharmed in Google-China row
A subsidiary of mobile carrier China Unicom has started letting users reserve the Motorola XT701 and estimates the phone will ship around March 13, according to its Web site. The pre-sale appeared to have started Thursday or later. The price of the Motorola XT701 was listed as 4,299 yuan (US$630) on the China Unicom site. The 3G phone has a 3.7 inch touchscreen. The Motorola phone was one of two Android phones delayed in China after Google said in January that it planned to stop censoring results on its China-based search engine. Google’s announcement raised fears of a possible government backlash and harm to the use of Android in China. Google.cn is currently still censoring search results, … Read entire article »
iPhone-Siri updated for iPod touch and gets some new features
Siri for the iPhone was quite a hit when it came out earlier this year. You could ask it questions like, “where is the best pizza nearby?” and Siri would find the answer. My favorite response was when I asked if there was a God, and Siri gave me directions to the nearest churches. As much as people loved the app, … Read entire article »
iPhone-Password application gives wrong info to fraudsters
The application, MobileSitter, will store passwords, PINs (personal identification numbers) and TANs (transaction authentication numbers). Those secret codes are encrypted and then revealed by entering a master password. The danger with storing passwords in such applications is that there are methods a hacker can use to get that master password. Attackers may try brute-force or dictionary attacks, where different passwords are repeatedly tried using automated programs, said Rachid El Khayari, a research fellow in secure mobile systems at Fraunhofer. Some password storage applications do not limit the number of times passwords can be entered, he said. The MobileSitter, however, will always return an answer regardless of what master password is entered. If your debit card PIN is … Read entire article »
