iPhone-TomTom submits updated app for Apple review

The makers of the TomTom app for the iPhone have let us know that they’ve submitted an updated version that adds real-time traffic information, Google local search, and even some secret features the company isn’t talking about yet. The TomTom app was eagerly sought out last year, but of late has fallen a bit behind market leader Navigon. This new release, with real-time info and Google local, will give both apps rough feature parity. The current … Read entire article »

iPhone-Flickr faster with Flickit Pro

iPhone-Flickr faster with Flickit Pro

I love Flickr (and alliteration, apparently). That is, I love Flickr on my desktop, and often on my Apple TV. I’ve never really been in love with the mobile experience, mostly due to long wait times and cumbersome navigation. When Mike Bernardo from Green Volcano Software contacted me about Flickit Pro, his Flickr app for the iPhone, I was definitely game to try it. I bought a copy the same day in the hopes that … Read entire article »

iPad-Reader: Steve Jobs says no tethering between iPad and iPhone

Steve Jobs appears to have fired off a tersely worded email reply to a user in Sweeden who asked whether the WiFi-only iPad could be tethered to the iPhone: “No.” Jezper Söderlund of the Swedish website Slashat.se reports that he sent Apple’s chief executive an email identifying himself as an Apple customer before adding, “I’m also awaiting the release of the iPad. However, I have one question: Will the wifi-only version somehow support tethering thru my iPhone?” The full email headers Söderlund forwarded to AppleInsider appear to indicate that Jobs sent his one word reply at 8:30 AM from his iPhone. Whether one can tether Apple currently supports Bluetooth and USB (but not WiFi) tethering to share an iPhone’s 3G mobile signal with another computer in iPhone 3.x software. However, enabling the feature … Read entire article »

iPhone-Siri updated for iPod touch and gets some new features

iPhone-Siri updated for iPod touch and gets some new features

Siri for the iPhone was quite a hit when it came out earlier this year. You could ask it questions like, “where is the best pizza nearby?” and Siri would find the answer. My favorite response was when I asked if there was a God, and Siri gave me directions to the nearest churches. As much as people loved the app, iPod touch owners were left out in the cold. Not now. The app has been … Read entire article »

iPhone-Android largely unharmed in Google-China row

A subsidiary of mobile carrier China Unicom has started letting users reserve the Motorola XT701 and estimates the phone will ship around March 13, according to its Web site. The pre-sale appeared to have started Thursday or later. The price of the Motorola XT701 was listed as 4,299 yuan (US$630) on the China Unicom site. The 3G phone has a 3.7 inch touchscreen. The Motorola phone was one of two Android phones delayed in China after Google said in January that it planned to stop censoring results on its China-based search engine. Google’s announcement raised fears of a possible government backlash and harm to the use of Android in China. Google.cn is currently still censoring search results, but lifting its filters would defy Chinese regulations. Google did postpone availability of Google apps … Read entire article »

iPhone-Password application gives wrong info to fraudsters

The application, MobileSitter, will store passwords, PINs (personal identification numbers) and TANs (transaction authentication numbers). Those secret codes are encrypted and then revealed by entering a master password. The danger with storing passwords in such applications is that there are methods a hacker can use to get that master password. Attackers may try brute-force or dictionary attacks, where different passwords are repeatedly tried using automated programs, said Rachid El Khayari, a research fellow in secure mobile systems at Fraunhofer. Some password storage applications do not limit the number of times passwords can be entered, he said. The MobileSitter, however, will always return an answer regardless of what master password is entered. If your debit card PIN is “5555” but a wrong master password is entered, the MobileSitter will decrypt a value based … Read entire article »

iPhone-VeriFone credit card reader gets deal to be in Apple Stores

The Square credit card reader for the iPhone has gotten most of the buzz around here, especially after we saw that impressive demo at Macworld a few weeks ago. But VeriFone’s competing reader has been given the green light by Apple itself: the unit has been granted a deal for shelf space. VeriFone will be selling its PAYware Mobile units inside Apple’s retail stores coming up as soon as the end of March. I’m not … Read entire article »

iPad-Wonder what the web looks like on the Flash-less iPad? There’s a Chrome extension for that. – AppleSKY

With the CubeMe extensions, your Chrome browser will pretend it’s the iPad and replace all Flash content on web pages with what you’d see on the iPad – the blue lego cubes. CubeMe’s developer stressed they have no affiliation with Adobe or Apple whatsoever and described the extension as follows: This extension replaces all Flash content with the ubiquitous blue cube iPhone users are accustomed to seeing. Pretend you’re on an iPad! Tentatively named the blue cube … Read entire article »

iPhone Games-'Volkswagen Think Blue. Challenge' – Free Edutainment… With Online Leaderboards

Late last year Volkswagen teamed up with Firemint to bring us Real Racing GTI [Free], a cleverly disguised free demo of Real Racing [$4.99] loaded with VW cars and branding that is still totally worth downloading if you haven't tried out Real Racing yet. VW's most recent collaboration was just released today, this time working with Fish Labs to bring us what appears to be some kind of crazy economical driving edutainment game that appears to … Read entire article »

iPad-Interest in Amazon Kindle wanes after Apple iPad unveiling

While most who currently own an e-reader have a Kindle from Amazon, a new survey found that a majority of consumers who intend to buy an e-reader in the near future will opt instead for the Apple iPad. ChangeWave recently conducted a survey of 3,171 consumers the week after Apple announced the iPad, and the results suggest that the forthcoming device is poised to make a huge splash in the e-reader market. “In particular, while a handful … Read entire article »
